Specialized Treatment Plans

We provide diagnosis and treatment for colorectal cancer of all kinds and in all stages. Dr. Pappas will create a treatment plan focused on addressing your specific needs, and will use information gathered from a rectal exam, fecal occult blood test, and other tests to recommend surgery, chemotherapy, and other procedures.

The focus of colorectal cancer treatment is the removal of cancerous cells, which requires surgery on various parts of the colon, rectum, and anus. The surgery, in addition to screenings to ensure cancer is completely removed, may be all that is necessary to treat colorectal cancer in its early stages. Based on the results of the diagnosis, Dr. Pappas will determine whether additional procedures such as chemotherapy are necessary, and will make follow-up recommendations following your surgery.

Surgery and Chemotherapy

At Colon & Rectal Surgical Specialists of New York, we can perform colon resection surgery to remove cancerous cells. For your convenience, our ambulatory surgical center is equipped with everything we need to perform the surgery. When treating colorectal cancer in its early stages, we can often provide treatment using laparoscopic robotic surgery alone. Compared to traditional methods, this approach is less invasive, has a shorter recovery time, and results in less bleeding and pain than traditional surgery.

In combination with a laparoscope, we use thin, highly precise surgical instruments to access your colon, and to locate and remove the cancerous tissue. We also remove a small amount of healthy tissue to ensure the thorough absence of cancerous cells. Next, the healthy tissue is reconnected. In some cases, this tissue cannot be immediately reconnected, and a temporary or permanent colostomy may be necessary, but we take every measure to avoid this. Once surgery is complete, the incisions are carefully closed to minimize visible scarring. You can expect an in-patient recovery of approximately three days following the procedure.

When treating colorectal cancer in the later stages, chemotherapy may be recommended in addition to surgery. Chemotherapy can stop the multiplication of cancer cells, and can be administered in a variety of ways. When necessary, Dr. Pappas will make a specific set of chemotherapy recommendations based on your medical needs.

Follow-up

We strive to help patients achieve a cancer-free state, and to remain cancer-free for a lifetime. Dr. Pappas stays in close contact with his patients after surgery, and will schedule follow-up visits to make sure your recovery is progressing properly. He will provide instructions that may include additional procedures and exams, and he will educate you regarding at-home care to ensure lasting results.

Seeking prompt care from an experienced surgeon is the best step you can take to prevent your colorectal cancer from spreading or returning.
