Diverticulitis can have symptoms ranging from moderate to severe. Severe cases will often require hospitalization and emergency surgery. Most people over the age of 50 have diverticulosis.
There are many misconceptions that people have in regards to diverticulitis. For one thing is that diverticulosis is the condition of having the pockets. In fact, the majority of people over the age of 50 have diverticulosis, but many of those patients will never develop any complications of diverticulosis such as diverticulitis or bleeding from diverticulosis. Well, again, with diverticulitis those symptoms can vary from being very mild to very severe, mild being where it's just some abdominal pain, more commonly in the left lower part of the abdomen, which may require just some antibiotics that you take at home, to where the pain is very severe and requires hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics. In more severe episodes it may require emergency surgery. So patients that may require surgery, more specifically electively, can have the surgery done by us at CRSSNY and can be done laparoscopically, robotically, which certainly will significantly shorten the duration of the patient's recovery and get patients back to work much quicker.
