Interview with Dr. Jason D’Cruz of CRSSNY
What drew you to the field?
Colon and rectal diseases are common in the US and affect all age groups, gender, and socioeconomic strata of society. Being a colorectal surgeon allows me to help the entire community.
What’s one misconception you wish more people understood about the field?
Patients are often hesitant to visit their doctor when they have symptoms related to the colon, rectum or anus, understandably so. We’re here to take care of you, and we can help you! Don’t be shy to come to the office for a checkup.
When a patient comes to you feeling nervous or embarrassed, what is the first thing you say or do to help put them at ease?
“We’re a team.” I’m here to take care of you and help you make an important or sometimes life-changing medical decision. At that moment, you are my only focus.
Tell us about a recent rewarding moment you had with a patient.
After we discharged a patient who had a complex procedure and spent some time in the hospital. Just a card which said, “Thank you to you and your team.” It means the world to me.
What’s one piece of proactive health advice you’d give to patients?
Everything in moderation. That’s the secret to success in health and wellbeing.
How do you decompress after a busy day?
Gym, tennis or a simple outing with friends.
What’s your one must-have in your office?
A picture of my parents and a textbook of colorectal surgery. Thankful for the past and looking forward to lifelong learning.
What’s a skill or hobby you’ve been trying to master lately?
Pickleball and cooking.
What’s your go-to song or snack before heading to the operating room?
Song is whichever artist my residents choose to listen to. Snack would have to be salted peanuts.
What’s a procedure or piece of technology in the field that excites you right now?
Natural orifice surgery. We can now remove the colon without a small incision to ‘extract’ it, truly making the surgery somewhat “incisionless.” We make this decision together with the patient based on the diagnosis and complexity of the problem.
