When to Contact CRSSNY

Early detection may prevent your condition from becoming more serious, while waiting to see our physicians may only increase certain risks. Please contact us immediately if you are experiencing:

Pain

Call us if you have anal area pain lasting more than 48 hours that over-the-counter medication does not relieve. You should also reach out if the pain or discomfort in your anal region worsens or becomes chronic.

Rectal Bleeding

It is time to reach out to a physician if you experience rectal bleeding, which can be caused by chronic constipation, anal fissures, passing hard stools during bowel movements, hemorrhoids, or more serious conditions.

Common Causes of Anal Pain

Anal pain can be indicative of:

  • Hemorrhoids
  • Anal fissures
  • Abscess
  • Muscle spasms
  • Anal ulcers
  • Skin problems
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Tumors
  • Fungal infections
  • Fistulas
  • Levator Ani Syndrome Spasms (more common in women)

Our doctors will conduct a thorough screening to determine the cause of your symptoms and the best possible solution in your case.

Anal Pain Treatment Options

Hemorrhoids can be treated with dietary changes, heat therapy, prescription creams, and if needed, surgical removal.

Anal fissures often heal thanks to steroid creams, warm baths, and BOTOX® injections to decrease muscle spasms. However, surgery is sometimes needed.

Cancerous tumors of either the anus or rectum can be treated with surgery, especially if detected in the early stages.

Blood clots or an abscess may require drainage.

If a patient experiences skin irritation or an infection, we often treat it with prescription medicine or topical cream.

Many STDs also respond to non-invasive treatments.

Can I Relieve My Pain at Home?

Possibly, but consult CRSSNY first if you are experiencing pain or discomfort. That way, the best at-home solution for your symptoms can be recommended if more advanced treatments are not needed. At-home treatments may include:

Medications

To avoid complications and unforeseen side effects, take only medications prescribed by your team at CRSSNY.

Dietary Fiber

Eat 30 grams of fiber a day. Foods like nuts, fruits, and grains can help relieve pain and maintain regular bowel movements.

Hydration

Drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day to soften your stool and make bowel movements easier.

Treat Irritated Areas Carefully

Wash irritated anal areas gently with warm water. Do not scrub with soap and avoid scratching itchy areas or using harsh toilet paper.

Avoid Irritating Creams

Refrain from using moisturizers and creams, as these can actually irritate your anus.

Treating Anal Fissures

An Anal Fissure can cause a significant amount of discomfort for the sufferer. A Fissure is a small tear right at the anal verge. Occasionally, medication is all that is required for treatment, but if the problem persists, a surgical intervention may be necessary.
