Frank Caliendo, MD, MHCDS, FACS, FASCRS

Dr. Caliendo was born and raised on Long Island. He attended Hofstra University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology with a minor in music. He then went on to receive his Medical Degree at The University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School. From there he completed five years of General Surgery training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Dr. Caliendo then pursued specialty training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ. There he trained under Dr. Eugene Salvati, regarded as one of the “fathers” of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Before completing his specialty training Dr. Caliendo was asked to remain in New Jersey and join Dr. Salvati’s group. Dr. Caliendo practiced in NJ until 2005 when he was recruited to join the NSLIJ Health System. Dr. Caliendo was made Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 2012 and held that position until 2016 when he joined CRSSNY.

Along with the expertise in treating colon and rectal diseases, Dr Caliendo brings with him a vast experience in laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery. Dr. Caliendo has performed hundreds of laparoscopic colon and rectal surgical operations.  He has had the honor and privilege of teaching these procedures to colon and rectal surgical residents since 2000. In addition to laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery, Dr. Caliendo has been at the forefront of robotic colon and rectal surgery. With the robotic system Dr. Caliendo is able to perform even more minimally invasive resections of the colon and rectum.

Dr. Caliendo is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery as well as the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He serves as the Senior Vice President of the Mount Sinai Health Network, and as Director of Colorectal Surgical Services at South Nassau Community hospital. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (FASCRS). In 2015, Dr. Caliendo completed a Masters program in Health Care Delivery Science from Dartmouth College and Tuck Business School (MHCDS). Dr. Caliendo is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at NSLIJ-Hofstra Medical School. He has presented research at local and regional colon and rectal surgical society meetings as well as the national meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Dr. Caliendo’s practice consists of the treatment of routine and complex disorders of the colon, rectum and anus. His areas of interest include laparoscopic and robotic surgery for the treatment of diseases of the colon and rectum as well as a commitment to the value-based improvement of health care delivery by achieving better outcomes.
