Restore Your Rectal Health with Prolapse Treatment

Rectal prolapse is a relatively rare condition which occurs when the rectum (the last part of the large intestine) loses the normal attachment that keeps it in place. The rectum drops and can slide out through the anal opening. At Colon & Rectal Surgical Specialists of New York, we can diagnose the cause of your prolapse and find the most effective treatment option for your needs. Our colorectal specialists take great care to provide discreet, comfortable diagnosis and treatment. With multiple locations, including offices in East Setauket and Garden City, NY, we make outstanding care accessible to you.

How Do I Know If I Have Rectal Prolapse?

Generally, patients first notice a lump or swelling coming out of their anus after a bowel movement. The first few times this occurs, your rectum may return on its own or you may be able to push it back into place. However, as time goes on, you may experience symptoms more frequently, such as when you cough, sneeze, or stand up.

Causes and Treatment of Rectal Prolapse

In this video, Dr. Sarah Bibi Soleh of Colon & Rectal Surgical Specialists of New York describes the symptoms of and treatments for rectal prolapse. Women who are elderly or have had multiple pregnancies are particularly at-risk for rectal prolapse. At CRSSNY, our doctors treat rectal prolapse with both outpatient and surgical methods.

Our advanced endoscopic surgical techniques can repair rectal prolapse.

Other symptoms of rectal prolapse include:

  • Bleeding from the rectum
  • Pain or discomfort
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty controlling bowel movements
  • Some patients report the sensation of sitting on a ball or the feeling that they have not passed everything during a bowel movement.

Prolapse Triggers

The precise cause of rectal prolapse is not fully understood. However, the condition can be triggered by:

  • Chronic constipation
  • Conditions involving excessive coughing
  • Diarrhea
  • Neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis
  • Pregnancy
  • Weakened muscles due to age
  • Prior injury to the hip or anal area
  • Rectal prolapse is much more common in women than men, especially in women older than 50. For older women, rectal prolapse tends to occur at the same time as a prolapsed uterus or bladder.

Treating a Rectal Prolapse

Before recommending treatment, your colorectal specialist will conduct a physical examination and perform any necessary tests. If you are uncomfortable about certain diagnostic tests, our staff anesthesiologist offers several forms of sedation to ensure your comfort.

For most patients, surgery relieves or greatly improves symptoms of rectal prolapse.

While treating constipation is helpful in some cases, many patients with rectal prolapse will require surgery. At Colon & Rectal Surgical Specialists of New York, we make every effort to treat this condition without surgery. Your specialist may recommend surgery based on several factors, including:

  • Your age
  • Your physical condition
  • The extent of prolapse
  • The results of your tests
  • Whether you are constipated

For patients who need surgery, our state-of-the-art surgical center is equipped with the latest technology. Our surgeons use advanced endoscopic techniques to treat rectal prolapse.

During your procedure, your surgeon will precisely target the prolapsed area and return it to the proper place. By performing your procedure endoscopically, you can experience shorter recovery times and less discomfort after treatment. For most patients, surgery relieves or greatly improves symptoms of rectal prolapse.
